Child’s Birthday- From Scientist to Superhero Part II

Now I understand that inspiration and logistics don’t always mesh up.  Especially when you throw a few munchkins into the equation.  So the idea to set up a photo booth to capture a  before and after shot of each kiddo from a scientist to superhero via a wardrobe change may not fly.  At the very least, once they make their costume transformation, it may be a good time to capture some photos before the chaos ensues.  A black and white skyline makes a great backdrop which the primary colors will pop against.  Have some fun props available so the kids can ham it up… set to the Superman Theme Song of course.

We have to keep the munchkins occupied so they don’t completely tear up your house.  A few party games such as  Kryptonite Toss or Musical Chairs are great for indoors, or Freeze Tag and Red Rover for outdoors if weather allows.  I suggested marbles, because you know I like to kick it old school, but sista says no dice.  These kids don’t even know what marbles are.  Guess we lost ’em.

On to the baking part of the agenda – this is where yards of plastic drop sheeting comes in handy!  Kids sized lab coats will also keep the munchkins muck free, and will set the stage for a science lab baking station.  Put up signage for making cookies, such as “Monster Cookie Lab” for smoosh or sugar cookies.   Smoosh cookies are made from your basic drop cookie batter, and the kids mix a variety of bits and pieces in before shaping their own cookie prior to baking.  Smoosh ingredients could be marshmallows “Marsh-molecules”, M&M’s “Atomic Pills” , crushed Oreo’s “Space Lava”, raisins “Radi-yum”, etc.  What the heck… you don’t have to eat them.   With sugar cookies, you can pre-bake the shapes…  how about throwing some ninja’s into the action?  Your munchkins can ice, sprinkle and sparkle to their hearts content – and eat them too.  Er, actually, maybe this would be a good post meal activity.

In my limited child care experience, hungry kids are not happy kids.  But I don’t think we have to labor over dinner here peoples, cuz you know they just want to eat hot dogs and mac & cheese.  Easy peasy.  My maternal instinct wants to get some veggies in their growing bodies – mini carrots and ranch dip will suffice.  I doubt I would have any success getting them to tuck in to a plate of spinach – leave that to Popeye.  Maybe some  cool plates and napkins would provide encouragement?  Put the green in their “Kryptonade” instead, by adding a couple of drops of food coloring to apple juice or lemonade.

Since the party is for the kids, focus attention on what matters most to them.  The.  Loot.  Bag.  The anticipation of what is tucked inside that glorious take home satchel… can we get this party over with already??  Mmm… loot bags.  To keep this party the gift that keeps on giving, lets decorate the bag for the hero’s of science and have fun tagging the items:

  • Ring (for power)
  • Beads (medal of honor)
  • Gumballs (atomic pills)
  • Eye mask (bat eyes)
  • Diploma – Cookie Master!
  • Other science or superhero type trinkets from the dollar store/ dollar section of target pencils/ superhero book
  • Kaleidoscope
