Patio season – up on the roof

For some, the year is broken up into 2 seasons… Winter, and Patio Season.  With the mindset that there can never be enough outdoor restaurant seating, I believe I fall into in the latter camp.  Now for any of you city dwellers pioneering the urban landscape, a rooftop patio is the pièce de résistance of patio season and the envy of all patio revelers.  You may not have a lot of green space to spread out your picnicking accoutrements, but the horizontally challenged party space is unique and coveted all the same.

Share your urban oasis by inviting friends for an after work cocktail party serving light snacks and refreshments.  That way, guests can get maximum viewing pleasure, as the sun goes down and the lights of the city emerge.  A few simple details to consider for your Soiree in the Sky….

Invite the neighbors – In densely populated areas, it is better to share the love than alienate your neighbors.  Hopefully they subscribe to the notion –  if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em!  As always, the more the merrier…

Mood music – Play some lounge groove music for your guests to unwind and socialize to.  Maybe you’re lucky enough to count an amateur DJ as a friend? If not, this is something an ipod and a set of speakers can easily rectify…

Cocktail Menu – Simple doesn’t have to mean boring.  Put together a couple of easy to assemble cocktail options so you or your guests can quickly refresh drinks throughout the evening.  Pineapple Iced Tea or Grapefruit Negroni anyone?

Party snacks – You used real fruit in those drinks didn’t you?  Even still, it probably isn’t enough sustenance to see your guests into the evening.  Prepare some snacks that can be made ahead of time, so that all you need to do is set them out.  Items that work well at room temperature are a good place to start  – olive tapenade, garlic hummus, or a meat and cheese tray served with grilled crostini.

Now for some more glorious rooftop dining pics…
