Of all the New Years resolutions I am embarking upon, I feel best about meatless Monday.  Hubs and I have been discussing more vegetarian meals leading up to the new year, ever since watching the documentary Forks over Knives.  Yes, I believe most people have too much meat in their diet, so count us in for 2 less carnivorous meals each week (breakfast is always meat-free at our house).

Here we are again at the start of a new year.  Where did the last one go?  The older we get the faster the years seem to fly by.  That’s why I love this time of year.  It is an opportunity to slow down, assess where you’re at, focus on the year ahead, set goals for yourself… you know the drill.  I keep my new year’s resolutions close by throughout the year in order to keep me on course.  This year, I am going to up the ante a bit, and assign actionable items to the usual “eat healthy, stay fit mantra”.  Exciting times ahead!

I have a confession to make.  This year, I bought a candle that smells like sugar cookies.  Something was askew as I strolled the aisles at Home Depot last weekend.  Baking? At the Home Depot?  For a second I thought I might be at Williams-Sonoma, but the lumberyard quickly brought me back to my senses.  Like a bloodhound, I had to find my way to the mouthwatering source of incongruity.  Et voila, a brightly colored display of holiday scents – from plug in to aerosol to my humble candle.  And so I brought the inspiration of Christmas cookies home with me – holiday spirit of baking, alight!!

OK party people, this stuff is the ticket.  Since I couldn’t find a recipe for this dee-lish snack mix online, I had to march myself into the kitchen to whip up a batch.  I was obsessing over it when it appeared the internet was devoid of the world’s most perfect flavor combination.   Tasting is believing!

Well, this is a new one… I googled the recipe for the AWESOME party snack mix I made a couple of years ago for Christmas gifts, and I couldn’t find it. What the what? An internet search doesn’t immediately deliver the precise results into your hot little hands in a mere 0.26 seconds? This is unheard of. Salivating through my round up of delicious home made sweet and savory snack mixes, I knew I had to share this fantastic little number – but where the heck was it hiding?

Well it’s just after Thanksgiving, and you know what that means… time to start preparing for Christmas.  Hey, it wasn’t my idea to replace the Halloween decorations with the Christmas ones, but here we are, up to our eyeballs in garland, ribbon, and all things sparkly.  And with the post-Thanksgiving tryptophan coursing through our veins, what better time to cozy up and start our Christmas crafting.

In reminiscing about the Thanksgiving holiday, I have come to the conclusion that I might just be the luckiest girl alive.  See how this T-day fairytale plays out…  Lucky fact # 1. As a transplanted Canadian, my side of the family celebrates Thanksgiving one month earlier, so no picking sides or doing the dinner table shuffle on a belly full of turkey required.  Lucky fact # 2. Destiny leads me to find the perfect match hubby while living in geographically remote and distant cities – the stars must have been aligned for that fortuitous connection.  Extended family are most awesome and completely normal.  Hurray!  We could stop here, but… Lucky fact # 3.  Hubby and said extended family hail from Korea.  Let the Korean Inspired Thanksgiving food extravaganza begin!

With Halloween tucked safely behind us, it’s time to set our sights on the 2 month sprint leading up to Christmas.  Although many dread the frenzy of activity as we count off the last days of the year, it is nice to focus on all the cozy and heartwarming experiences of the holiday season.  Often a nostalgic time of year, it is also nice to switch up traditions and introduce some new ideas, decor and tastes to your table.

Ah politics.  What has become of our country – so divided she is.  One of those forbidden topics of business has bled into mainstream conversation.  The messages from candidates have taken on such a negative bent and focus on the shortcomings of their rivals instead of their own potential for positive impact.  Come November 6th, we are all going to have to get behind one president and join together to appeal for positive change.  Take a step in the right direction by inviting friends, neighbors and family – Republicans and Democrats alike -to celebrate democracy and socialize while watching the wild outcome of election returns.

These last few days leading up to Halloween are the time to really get into the holiday spirit.  And to scare the wits out of yourself, of course!  People devote the entire year to concocting the most creative, spookiest and frightening attractions imaginable.  So now is the perfect time to visit your  local haunted house, walk or maze to send chills up your spine, elicit hysteria and possibly reoccurring nightmares…
